Get Organized this Spring
Now that spring is in full bloom (thanks to all the rain we've been having these past few weeks), I want to share some tips that I have for getting organized. I used to have the mindset of let's keep everything! Ticket stubs, playbills, random receipts, old planners, magazines, you name it. I would keep other things, like old clothes and shoes, because I wasn't sure when I would need it again. That mindset ends up leaving you with a lot of clutter. I've been there, and I'm still trying to get rid of all the clutter I've accumulated over the years.
Throw away things you don't need.
What falls into this category? Anything that you've kept for memories, like playbills, ticket stubs, old planners -- get rid of it all! After all, how many times do you plan on going through all of it? What I realized recently is that you don't need to keep little mementos like that to remember that you did something. Be present in everything you are experiencing, and you'll remember! I held onto planners from high school through college and finally threw them away a few weeks ago. They were cluttering space in my closet, and I don't need to remember what I had for homework six years ago.
Donate clothes, shoes, accessories, and books.
As I mentioned above, I used to think I need to keep clothes and shoes because I wasn't sure when I would need them. Since this was clogging up space in my drawers and closet, it was hard to see what new clothes I had to wear, or even buy anything new because I didn't have space. Now that I've been out of college for two years, I've been in the process of revamping my style. A lot of the clothes that I had been wearing were from high school and college, and I didn't feel that it reflected me as a 23-year-old. So, I had to go through everything that I owned and ask myself three questions:
- Did I wear this in the last year?
- How do I feel when I wear it?
- Will I wear this in the next few months?
I also donated a lot of my books that I held onto to potentially give to my kids one day. Why? Well, I realized that when I was a kid, I didn't want my mom's old books. I wanted new books. So, I donated a bunch of old books to the library.
Get containers to organize everything!
I mentioned in one of my previous vlogs that Travis and I will be updating and continuing to live in the house that I grew up in (once my brother moves out to CA). I am at this step in the organizational process now, and I am so excited to go to The Container Store and get different products to help organize my clothes, shoes, and desk drawers. I will keep you updated on my progress in vlogs, so please subscribe to my channel if you haven't already to stay tuned for those videos!
What organization tips do you have? I'd love to know!
