Dear 2016...

My, what a year 2016 was. The year was unexpected, challenging at times, exciting, and filled with learning opportunities. To be honest, if you asked me a few weeks ago, I would have told you that this wasn't one of my favorite years. However, I decided to look at the year in a different way. Instead of focusing on the difficult aspects of the year, I should remember the positives from each moment and the lessons I learned.

The one thing I would say about 2016 is that it was definitely filled with lots of lessons. This year has been very transitional. I have moved on from college life into the professional world. At times, the adjustment hasn't been easy, but it's all very exciting. Reflecting back to the start of 2016, I remember feeling quite nervous. I didn't know what the year would bring me and where/if I would get a job. Now that the year is over and I'm looking ahead into 2017, I still don't know what the year will bring me. Except this time, I'm very excited. I have 365 days to look forward to that will be filled with their fair share of fun, adventures, lessons, and happiness.

The lessons I learned in 2016 were:

  • Don't wait for things to happen to you, go out and make things happen. This year, I was extremely proactive about planning ahead for things. On our one year anniversary, my boyfriend and I sat down and wrote a list of things we both hoped to accomplish/do by our two year anniversary (which is coming up in March). One of the things on the list was to visit Boston & Florida. When we wrote this down on the list, we thought hmm will we actually get the chance to visit both places in the year? Well, we did (you can read about our trips to Boston & West Palm Beach) and I think it was because we thought about it in advance and made it happen.
  • Difficult moments bring valuable lessons. 2016 had its fair share of difficult moments. For a while, I was playing woe is me and really looking at those bad moments in a negative light. Flipping the negative into a positive enabled me to see the lessons that each difficult moment brought. Each lesson that I learned molded me into a stronger person.
  • Take a chance. In middle school and high school, I always enjoyed making videos, sort of like vlogs before they were a thing, about what was going on in my life at the moment. I loved editing pictures and videos into mini movies and adding music to share with my family and friends. So, this past June I took a chance and uploaded my first YouTube video! After that, I decided to put it on hold and now I'm deciding to relaunch the channel. By the time you are reading this, I will be filming videos for my channel and I am very excited to share them with you. :)
  • Change is exciting. I think the scariest and most exciting part about change is the unexpected. We are so accustomed to routines and schedules, and change alters that. This year brought its fair share of changes and I can tell you right now that I wouldn't have pictured being where I am today at the start of 2016. That's one of the things that makes me excited about 2017, I have no clue what it will have in store.

I seriously can't believe that it is going to be 2017! I remember 2007 so vividly and to have that be a decade ago is insane. Time goes by so quickly and I want to make sure we all take advantage of every minute of it. Spend time doing the things you love, go on adventures, learn new things, and remember to view the positive in every situation.

I hope 2017 brings you all love, health, happiness, laughter, and fun adventures! Stay tuned for my New Year's Resolutions/Goals for 2017 and new videos on my YouTube channel.

xo, SO
