Tips for Buying a Car!
A few years ago, I leased my first car. Well, actually my mom helped me out a lot (thankfully) and put the lease in her name. She came with me to different dealerships to help me find the best deal. Now, my lease is ending and I am in the market for another car. This time around, I am shopping for it without my mom. I'm sure other post-grads are in the same shoes as I am and figured I would share some of my tips for buying a car!
- Research. I can't stress this enough, before going to any dealerships, research types of cars that you would like and figure out what your budget is. When you are at the dealership, the salespeople will try to get you to purchase a better model, however, if the base model has everything you need, why spend more money? Remember, that a car is meant to take you from point a to point b, having a sunroof won't make too much of a difference in the long run.
- Don't feel pressured to buy right away. After you've researched some cars, you should head to the dealerships. See what your options look like in person and find out pricing. Beware, salespeople can be very intrusive and brash. They will try to pressure you to buy a car right away. Don't feel pressured. I suggest going to the dealership with someone you feel comfortable with. For me, that's my boyfriend. I am so glad that he was with me during my most recent dealership trip. The salespeople were like piranhas. I wasn't sure I quite liked the model I was shown and did not want to make a purchase that day. At one point, three salespeople were trying to convince me to buy a car. After multiple times of saying no, I would not make a purchase that day despite whatever "deal" they would give me, we were able to leave the dealership.
- Be prepared to negotiate. Finally, once you've found your dream car and are willing to make a purchasing decision, be ready to negotiate. Don't settle for the first price that the salesperson will give you and don't give the first number. Once you are comfortable with the payment plan, feel confident in your decision to purchase the right car for you!
Hope these tips help!
