I’ve struggled with the concept of happiness for years. There are so many quotes out there about what happiness is and isn’t. Products are marketed as increasing happiness. Other people are stating what should and shouldn’t make you happy.
I used to think that if I accomplished x goal, then I would be happy. Or if I reached a particular stage in my life, it would bring me the happiness I was searching for. That’s not to say that I never feel or experience happiness in my day-to-day, it’s more to say that I was searching for a constant state of happiness. What I’ve found out to be true is that happiness is a mindset.
If I want to be happy, I need to stop focusing on the little annoyances of the day. Instead, shifting my mindset to one of gratitude (my word of the year for 2019), allows me to experience happiness more often. Sure, I don’t think anyone is ever happy 100% of the time because I believe you need to experience sadness/bad times to appreciate and know happiness/good times.
Besides practicing gratitude on a daily basis, I think that letting your light shine brings happiness too. What do I mean by this? Well, it’s stopping listening to that little voice in my head that tells me I can’t do certain things or I’m not good enough, or I’m weird for liking certain things, and it’s doing it! It is allowing myself to let my light shine by doing the things that bring me joy, regardless of what others think. It is ignoring everyone else’s opinion and focusing on the most important, my own.
While I’m still discovering what makes me happy, it’s all part of the journey. The bottom line is, start finding joy in the journey instead of thinking you’ll only get it when you reach the destination.
